MITRAL VALVE SURGERY

CARDIOSURGERY DEPARTMENT

Mitral valve disease includes conditions affecting the mitral valve, which regulates blood flow between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart. It is the most common form of heart valve disease and, if left untreated, may lead to complications such as heart failure.

Mitral Valve Regurgitation

Mitral Valve Regurgitation occurs when the valve does not close completely, allowing blood to flow backward into the left atrium.

Causes
  • Mitral valve prolapse, where the valve leaflets bulge into the atrium, often due to connective tissue degeneration.
  • Damage caused by infections (such as endocarditis), myocardial infarction or rheumatic fever.
  • Enlargement of the left ventricle due to hypertension or cardiomyopathy, causing valve dilation.
Symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Palpitations

Mitral Valve Stenosis

Mitral Valve Stenosis is characterised by narrowing of the valve opening, restricting blood flow into the left ventricle.

Causes
  • Rheumatic fever, the most common cause, leading to scar tissue formation and calcium deposition.
  • Congenital abnormalities or severe calcification of the valve.
Symptoms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Fluid retention

Mitral Valve Prolapse

Mitral Valve Prolapse is a common and usually benign condition in which the valve leaflets bulge into the left atrium during valve closure. In most cases, it does not cause symptoms; however, more severe forms may progress to mitral valve regurgitation.
