The condition
Vertebral fractures are different from fractures of the upper or lower limbs. The fracture or dislocation of a vertebra can cause pressure and damage to the spinal cord or nerve roots from bone fragments.
Most spinal fractures are the result of car accidents, falls, gunshot wounds or sports injuries.
The injury can range from a simple muscle and ligament strain to fractures and dislocated vertebrae and paralysis from spinal cord damage. Depending on the severity of the lesion, patients may experience pain, inability to walk or movement of the upper and lower limbs (paralysis).
The treatment
Non-invasive treatment
This is a conservative treatment regimen that involves immobilisation in the form of either bed rest (staying in bed) or specialised joints (specialised guards that immobilise the spine)
Invasive (surgical) treatment
Invasive (surgical) treatment includes a wide range of procedures. These can range from simple bone cement injections to complex spinal fusions using trans-axial screws and vertebral replacements.
Minimally invasive method
Kyphoplasty is a modern, minimally invasive method, which can help many patients today. It can be performed by experienced hands in a matter of minutes. It has minimal complications when correctly indicated and enables even frail, elderly patients to find a quick, safe and painless solution to the difficult and painful problem of a vertebral fracture.
