BARIATRICS SURGERY
An ever-increasing number of people worldwide face the problem of significant obesity. About 35% of Greeks are overweight and about 11% have a problem of clinically significant obesity.
Apart from the aesthetic and social problems that obese people face, the most important consequence of obesity is the so-called metabolic syndrome. The metabolic syndrome includes a variety of metabolic disorders that are very common in Western societies and which, either directly or indirectly by creating other problems, are responsible for the high morbidity rates of people with obesity. Such metabolic disorders include insulin resistance, diabetes, cholesterol and dyslipidemia, menstrual disorders, failure to conceive, hypertension and coronary heart disease. Other associated disorders due to increased body weight are sleep apnoea, hypoventilation syndrome, backache and joint pain, gastroesophageal reflux disease, cholelithiasis and fatty liver infiltration. Even certain malignancies have been found to be more common in obese people, such as colorectal, prostate, breast, uterine, gallbladder, etc.
